I’ve been seeing this "Distracted Boyfriend" meme everywhere for the last two days—the one where the guy is shown as a Canadian, looking back at a young, white, very slim, blonde woman in an "Europe" top, while a fat Trump as a short woman in an ill-fitting America outfit looks on angrily.
Tell me: do you really find this funny?
Feel free to call me a "woke asshole," but here's what I see:
Lookism:
Attractiveness discrimination is front and center here. The woman representing Europe is drawn according to conventional beauty standards, while the US figure is depicted with unflattering, distorted features to create a visual contrast.
Bodyshaming / Anti-Fatness:
The degraded figure is intentionally depicted as overweight and with a body type stereotypically deemed unattractive, aiming to suggest inferiority.
Ageism:
The contrast also relies on age difference: a young, wrinkle-free woman is juxtaposed with a significantly older-looking person.
Chauvinism / Patriotism:
Associating attractiveness with national symbols (EU flag, Canadian maple leaf, US flag) conveys a political devaluation of one country compared to others.
(Countries in themselves suck anyway, but whatever.)
Misogyny & Transphobia (Transmisogyny):
Trump’s facial features were edited onto a female, aging, and unflatteringly portrayed body. Purposefully using male-coded facial features on a person dressed as a woman to evoke disgust or ridicule from the viewer is a well-known transphobic trope.
Classism:
The figure's styling (a tight top with a flag pattern, unkempt hair) also feeds into stereotypes about the American lower class ("trailer trash").
And there are people who unironically don't mind this and feel the need to share or post it, instead of simply reporting and blocking the creators?
